C.J. Wilson

Angels pitcher C.J. Wilson talks hair, style and pre-game grooming
From:  NY Daily News

Angels pitcher C.J. Wilson has more than a 90 mph fastball on his resume — he’s also the face of Head & Shoulders and star of several hilarious commercials for the brand. The MLB player sat down with The Powder Room to talk hair, style and what products are in his medicine cabinet.

POWDER ROOM: Let’s talk about your hair. How do you style it?

C.J. WILSON: The biggest thing for me is I just need to make sure it’s clean. I generally wash it at night after the game. I sleep on it and that adds a little bit of wave, which I like. In the morning, I get up and use a little cream or clay, nothing too harsh. I like a look that’s not too polished, not too shiny.

PR: Does your hair always look like it does in the commercials?

CJ: No, because they want me to have a part. And I’m like, I don’t know how to part my hair! I go for Patrick Dempsey hair. He’s sort of my hair icon now.

PR: How did you get involved with Head & Shoulders?

CJ: They’re an official partner of MLB, so having a baseball player is part of their ad campaign. When they approached me, I really had to sell myself. They were literally looking at my hair, examining me and measuring me up. But I passed the test.

PR: What do your teammates think of your campaign?

CJ: They think it’s funny. What I wasn't prepared for is the reaction from guys on other teams. A guy from the Astros was like, “Hey, can you send me some shampoo?” and I’m like, “Yeah, give me your address.” Last year, I went up to [Joe] Mauer, and as a joke, asked him to sign my Head & Shoulders bottle. Ironically, I’m now on the other side. But as baseball players, we have a good sense of humor. Generally, we just make fun of each other.

PR: What will your grooming regimen be like for your upcoming wedding with model Lisalla Montenegro?

CJ: The biggest thing is, I’m going to have to time it so I don’t have a beard. My fiancé doesn’t mind me with a beard, but I prefer to be clean-shaven. I’m going to use the same stylist who worked on these commercials. I’m gonna hit her up, she’s awesome. When you’re marrying someone like I am, you don’t have to worry much about your personal appearance. She’s going to get all the attention anyway.

PR: What non-hair products do you use on a daily basis?

CJ: Just SPF.

PR: Do you ever steal any of your fiancé’s beauty products?

CJ: There’s this hairspray that she uses that’s really good, but it’s like $50 a bottle. I don’t want to admit to that, but sometimes I use it. I don’t even know what it’s called. She also has some cream stuff —I don’t know what it is, it’s not from America —and if I feel like my hair’s a little wild, I’ll try to use that. But I’m pretty low maintenance. I have to exercise; I can’t be running or sweating and having pomade dripping into my eyes.

PR: What's your favorite part of being involved in the campaign?

CJ: I got a chance to interact with Troy Polamalu and Brett Keisel [NFL players who also work with Head & Shoulders]. They’re hilarious. It’s not often you get to meet people outside of your sport. When you get a chance to break that routine and interact with other people, it’s fun.
