Kerwin Mathews 

(1926—2007) 

Supervirile and handsome as a model, hairy-chested, clean-shaven Mathews perfectly straddled the line between pretty boy and sexy man. Though he displayed flashes of sensuality in his earlier roles, his clean look also afforded him the ability to play a wholesome swashbuckling hero in the kinds of cheesy drive-in flicks that Spielberg later lovingly homaged with Harrison Ford standing in as the dude. Mathews lived a long life (and aged handsomely), eventually moving into selling antiques in San Franciso with his partner, Tom Nicoll (not sure if Mr. Nicoll survives today). They were together nearly 50 years, a wonderful piece of info to have when watching him tearing up the bad guys in his old movies. With the fascination for fantasy and horror at an all-time high, it's surprising to me how unknown Mr. Mathews remains.
