#IDAHO: Never Forget Sean Kennedy

Yesterday was #IDAHO — International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia — and it was also the tenth anniversary of the senseless killing of Sean Kennedy, a 20-year-old gay man.

Sean was leaving a straight bar when he was asked for a cigarette by a guy in a parked car. He generously complied, then was gay-bashed by a guy in the backseat of the car, Stephen Andrew Moller. Moller struck Kennedy so hard it separated Kennedy's brain from the brain stem. Kennedy went down, hitting his head and sustaining further injuries, of which he would die 17 hours later — brain dead for no reason at all.

Moller called a mutual friend of theirs after he attack. His voicemail message is that of a sociopath:

Hey, I was just wondering how your boyfriend’s feeling right about now [laughter]. The fucking faggot … Yeah boy, your boy is knocked out, man. The motherfucker. Tell him he owes me $500 for breaking my goddamn hand on his teeth, that fucking bitch.

Moller later claimed he had no idea Kennedy was gay.

Moller would serve less than one year for taking Kennedy's life, but the murder helped push hate-crimes legislation, a cause Kennedy's mom advocated for until her own health curtailed some of her activities.

This was 10 years ago — what has changed?
