“Coming Out Of Hiding”
Pamala Stanley
Was there a gayer song in the 80’s than “Coming Out Of Hiding?” Not according to my mother.
PICTURE IT: A small town in 1984. A young boy sneaks downstairs one Friday night to watch Night Tracks on TBS, because they featured music videos that were ignored by MTV. He instantly became entranced by a vibrant if confusing video called “Coming Out Of Hiding,” and barely managed to record half of it (the way every kid recorded music on TV and radio in those days, by shoving a tape recorder directly against the speaker).
He knows he must have this song, and begs his mother to take him to Camelot Music at the mall. They don’t have the single for “Coming Out Of Hiding,” but they have something even better, and he ends up purchasing his very first 12 inch record.
Over the next few weeks, he plays it nonstop, even when his sister tells him to “turn that retarded song off,” and oblivious to the signals he was ending his mother by singing “boy I've been watching you, now you’re gonna watch me too” around the house.
Years later, his mother would tell him that one of the clues she had to his eventual coming out was that “damn gay song” he would play over and over.
“Coming Out Of Hiding” is the only song on this countdown that didn’t actually hit the Hot 100, but it spent weeks on the “Bubbling Under” chart, peaking at #104 (and reached #4 on the dance chart).
Here’s the 12 inch version that outed a boy to his mother.
Pamala Stanley had other killer dance songs, including a HI-NRG version of Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon,” “If Looks Could Kill” (later covered by Heart), and “I Don’t Wanna Talk About It.” Here’s the glorious “This Is Hot.”
Pamala continues to perform. Here she is with “Is There A Straight Man In The House?”

“Come On Back”
F.U.S.B.I.
I don’t know where to begin with this. There’s the song, which sounds like a demo from The Cars from 1982. The lead singer, who literally strains with every note. Is that John Goodman on guitar? And then there’s the bizarre juxtaposition of the adorable, happy Asian guy on keyboard. WTF is this?

Caitlyn Jenner Honors Her Trans Friends At GLAAD Media Awards

Caitlyn Jenner was on hand at the 27th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in Beverly Hills on last Saturday night, and revealed just how important her friends and costars have been on her journey after coming out as transgender.
The former Olympian’s show, I Am Cait, tied with TLC’s I Am Jazz for Outstanding Reality Program, and Jenner took the opportunity to share just how much her costars mean to her.
“You girls have been the backbone,” Jenner shared about how much her friends have shaped her life in the past year. “You’re my absolute best friends and I know you’ll always have my back.”
Jenner has faced backlash for her controversial statements and general lack of knowledge about the LGBT community, but her friends and costars on the show — including Candis Cayne and Chandi Moore — have helped the reality star, and viewers across the country, to see just how difficult the average trans experience can be.
“When we finished season two, I mean, I was literally crying because I just couldn’t stand going through life without all you girls around,” Jenner said.

Bruce Springsteen Cancels North Carolina Concert: “Some Things Are More Important Than A Rock Show”
"It is the strongest means I have for raising my voice in opposition to those who continue to push us backwards."
From: NewNowNext
From: NewNowNext
North Carolinians are continuing to pay the price for the Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act, the new anti-LGBT law signed by Governor Pat McCrory last month. The latest personality to speak out against the measure is none other than Bruce Springsteen, who has canceled his April 10 concert in the Tar Heel State over the law.
Springsteen, currently touring with the E Street Band, posted a notice of the cancelation on his website along with a statement:
As you, my fans, know I’m scheduled to play in Greensboro, North Carolina this Sunday. As we also know, North Carolina has just passed HB2, which the media are referring to as the “bathroom” law.
HB2 — known officially as the Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act — dictates which bathrooms transgender people are permitted to use. Just as important, the law also attacks the rights of LGBT citizens to sue when their human rights are violated in the workplace. No other group of North Carolinians faces such a burden.
To my mind, it’s an attempt by people who cannot stand the progress our country has made in recognizing the human rights of all of our citizens to overturn that progress.Right now, there are many groups, businesses, and individuals in North Carolina working to oppose and overcome these negative developments. Taking all of this into account, I feel that this is a time for me and the band to show solidarity for those freedom fighters.
As a result, and with deepest apologies to our dedicated fans in Greensboro, we have canceled our show scheduled for Sunday, April 10th. Some things are more important than a rock show and this fight against prejudice and bigotry — which is happening as I write — is one of them.
It is the strongest means I have for raising my voice in opposition to those who continue to push us backwards instead of forwards.
That’s why they call him the Boss, folks.

PayPal Cancels New Charlotte Operations Center Over North Carolina’s Anti-LGBT Hate Law
From: Joe My God
This morning, April 5, Paypal, a global company dedicated to facilitating online payments, announced that it is withdrawing plans to open a new global operations center in Charlotte. The reason for their plans to withdraw? North Carolina’s House Bill 2, which was ramrodded through the North Carolina General Assembly on March 23, with just 12 hours from introduction to Governor Pat McCrory’s signature. The law knocks down municipalities’ ability to enact local ordinances protecting LGBT North Carolinians from discrimination and then codifies anti-transgender policies into state law and has seen enormous blow back over the past few weeks.
Two weeks ago, PayPal announced plans to open a new global operations center in Charlotte and employ over 400 people in skilled jobs. In the short time since then, legislation has been abruptly enacted by the State of North Carolina that invalidates protections of the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender citizens and denies these members of our community equal rights under the law.
The new law perpetuates discrimination and it violates the values and principles that are at the core of PayPal’s mission and culture. As a result, PayPal will not move forward with our planned expansion into Charlotte.
This decision reflects PayPal’s deepest values and our strong belief that every person has the right to be treated equally, and with dignity and respect. These principles of fairness, inclusion and equality are at the heart of everything we seek to achieve and stand for as a company. And they compel us to take action to oppose discrimination.
Our decision is a clear and unambiguous one. But we do regret that we will not have the opportunity to be a part of the Charlotte community and to count as colleagues the skilled and talented people of the region. As a company that is committed to the principle that everyone deserves to live without fear of discrimination simply for being who they are, becoming an employer in North Carolina, where members of our teams will not have equal rights under the law, is simply untenable.
While we will seek an alternative location for our operations center, we remain committed to working with the LGBT community in North Carolina to overturn this discriminatory legislation, alongside all those who are committed to equality. We will stand firm in our commitment to equality and inclusion and our conviction that we can make a difference by living and acting on our values. It’s the right thing to do for our employees, our customers, and our communities.

Blast From The Past: The Eighties
From: Favorite Hunks & Other Things
I am not sure how many of you watched CNN's The Eighties on Thursday, but for me, it is the ultimate blast of my eighties past. I watched much of the television that influenced my early life in the eighties, and entered my teen years about the time the 80's were ending. It was still a time of 3 networks and for most of it, our house was still without a VCR. Although we ended up buying one, after much begging and pleading of our parents, it was a Betamax, and a machine I wasn't even allowed to touch until the 90's rolled around.
I have written a few times about my affinity for the prime time soap Dallas. I didn't really watch it so much in the 80's, but I have intensely emotional memories of watching my parents watch the show. Friday nights were really the only night, they both sat down and watched television. I remember at first, I was ushered off to bed before the show started at 9 pm, but after a few years was able to stay up and watch with my parents.
I didn't actually watch the series, this time paying attention, until years later when it aired on the old The Nashville Network (TNN) and subsequently on DVD. The show, though dated, it a great window to the greed of the 80's and the first six or seven seasons were fun to re-watch. I loved me some Sue Ellen and Lucy Ewing and the many men who went in and out of their.... lives. One of Lucy's main loves was Mitch, played by the talented and beautifully blonde, Leigh McCloskey.
Mr. Lucy Ewing on Dallas
1980
Mitch didn't stay on the show too long, maybe because Leigh didn't always fit in with the rest of the cast. I am sure he got along OK with them, but the actor and artist always seemed a little too serious for all the silliness that surrounded him. With CNN's The Eighties, and it's focus on Dallas, and television of the decade, in it's first episode, I thought April might be a good time to look back at some of those 80's hunks who introduced me to the wonderful world of men.
