Today In History...

July 17th is Get to Know Your Customers Day

The third Thursday of the beginning of each quarter (January, April, July and October) is Get To Know Your Customer Day.  This is a day that happens just once a quarter to put emphasis on getting to know your customers or clients.

This is a simple concept.  Pick up the phone and call a customer you haven’t talked to in a while or don’t know that well.  Take someone to lunch.  Set up a few meetings.  Have a cocktail reception for a few of your customers. (Don’t make this one too big or you lose the personal contact and impact you are trying to achieve.)  Your goal to take dedicated time to build a stronger relationship with a few of your customers.

July 17th is Wrong Way Corrigan Day

Douglas "Wrong Way" Corrigan became an American folk icon during the Great Depression when, during a July 17 flight that was supposed to take him from Brooklyn to Long Beach, Calif., he flew to Dublin, Ireland, instead. The accomplished Irish-American aviator had previously been denied a flight route from New York to Ireland due to the poor conditions and age of his Curtis Robin monoplane.

Many still speculate that Wrong Way Corrigan went the "wrong way" on purpose, but if that was so, he took his secret to the grave; he passed away in 1995. Today we celebrate "Wrong Way Corrigan Day" to either pay tribute to his rebellious spirit or chuckle at his directional dyslexia.

July 17th is Yellow Pig Day

Yellow Pig Day originated in the 1960s when two math students from Princeton spent a long time obsessively analyzing the number 17. It seems that they went a little mad eventually, and decided to invent the concept of a yellow pig with 17 toes, 17 teeth, and so forth… Now Yellow Pig Day is an important part of the academic calendar, and is celebrated with cake, carols, parades and general revelry.
