Assignment Vienna is an American drama television series aired in the United States by ABC as an element in its 1972-73 wheel series The Men. The series, created by Eric Bercovici and Jerry Ludwig, was made by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Television.

Assignment Vienna told the story of Jake Webster (Robert Conrad), an American expatriate in Vienna who was the operator of Jake's Bar & Grill, an American-style establishment near the scenic heart of the city. In fact, the business was a cover for Jake's actual reason for being in Vienna. He was involved in tracking down various spies and international criminals at the behest of U.S. intelligence, which apparently held something against him which, if disclosed, would have resulted in his being deported from Austria and apparently then incarcerated in the United States. Jake's liaison with U.S. intelligence was a Major Caldwell (Charles Cioffi). Anton Diffring played Inspector Hoffman of the Vienna police.

The Men initially aired on Thursday nights but was moved at midseason to Saturday nights. It did not garner a large share of viewers in either time slot and none of the elements were renewed. The program was shot on location in Vienna.

The pilot film, called Assignment: Munich and aired earlier in 1972, had the same three main characters but a different cast (Jake, Major Caldwell and Inspector Hoffman were played by Roy Scheider, Richard Basehart and Werner Klemperer) and was filmed on location in Munich. The location for the series was changed to prevent any disruption to filming caused by that year's Olympic Games, and Scheider chose not to return for the series in favor of a movie career.

In 2010 Film Score Monthly released Dave Grusin's series theme and three episode scores (along with John Parker's two additional scores) as part of their five-disc collection of MGM television music, TV Omnibus: Volume One (1962-1976).

Crash is a 2004 crime drama film co-written, produced, and directed by Paul Haggis. The film is about racial and social tensions in Los Angeles, California. A self-described "passion piece" for Haggis, Crash was inspired by a real-life incident, in which his Porsche was carjacked outside a video store on Wilshire Boulevard in 1991.

Several characters' stories interweave during two days in Los Angeles: a black detective estranged from his mother; his criminal younger brother and gang associate; the white district attorney and his irritated, pampered wife; a racist white police officer who disgusts his more idealistic younger partner; an African American Hollywood director and his wife who must deal with the officer; a Persian-immigrant father who is wary of others; and a hard-working Hispanic family man, a locksmith. The film differs from many other films about racism in its rather impartial approach to the issue. Rather than separating the characters into victims and offenders, victims of racism are often shown to be racist themselves in different contexts and situations. Also, racist remarks and actions are often shown to stem from ignorance and misconception rather than a malicious personality.

Crash stars a large ensemble cast including Sandra Bullock, Don Cheadle, Matt Dillon, Jennifer Esposito, Michael Peña, Brendan Fraser, Terrence Howard, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Thandie Newton, and Ryan Phillippe. Matt Dillon was particularly praised for his performance and received Academy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor. Additionally, the cast won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. The film received six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for Paul Haggis, and won three for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing at the 78th Academy Awards. It was also nominated for nine BAFTA awards, and won two for Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Thandie Newton.

USC receives exhibit dedicated to oldest gay motorcycle club in the US

From:  Roadtrippers
The Satyrs Motorcycle Club was founded in 1954 with seven members, but little did anyone know it would become the oldest running LGBT organization (and oldest gay motorcycle club) in the world. The exhibit, "The Long Road to Equality", which chronicles 60 years of Satyrs history, is being donated to the world's largest repository of LGBT history at USC Libraries.

The exhibit features more than 300 original photos, buttons, posters, and videos from the various gay clubs that have populated LA over the years, the oldest, of course, being the Satyrs.

"This exhibit shows how these former military men came together post-World War II, arriving in the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to form a lasting club at great risk during the peak of McCarthyism," curator Garry Bowie explained. "These men just lived life, not thinking about how they would affect the future, as they helped spawn the creation of 19 clubs in Southern California and mentored dozens of newly formed clubs across the nation."

The Satyrs trail-blazed the way for not just motorcycle clubs, but LGBT protections across the country during the pre-Stonewall era, and the organization was "more than just a club, it was a movement".

The exhibit is making the recent move from Long Beach to USC after a successful run at the Cultural Alliance of Long Beach. The exhibit will become part of the library's many important historical collections accessible to the public, and the Satyrs rich past will be preserved for future generations to come.

As we've already reported, there’s no shortage of sinfully-sexy professional soccer players in the world.
