'What’s Eating Gilbert Grape' Mother Darlene Cates Dies at 69

Cates played the housebound mother to Johnny Depp's Gilbert Grape in the 1993 film
From: The Hollywood Reporter
Darlene Cates, the actress best known for her role as Bonnie Grape in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, died Sunday morning, her daughter Sheri Cates Morgan announced on Facebook. She was 69.

"It is with a bitter-sweet heart that we share that our precious wife, mother, and Gaga, Darlene Guthrie Cates, was called Home, somewhat unexpectedly, peacefully in her sleep Sunday morning, March 26th," wrote Morgan in a post along with two photos of Cates. "We take comfort in knowing that she is no longer in pain and is in the arms of our Heavenly Father, breaking away only to dance with our Savior, Jesus."

She added, "Dancing was something she talked about loving to do 'back in the day'!)"

Cates played the housebound, morbidly obese mother to Johnny Depp's Gilbert Grape and Leonardo DiCaprio's Arnie Grape in the 1993 film. DiCaprio earned a best supporting actor Oscar nomination, at age 19, for his role as the developmentally disabled teen.

“I’m not really the best in expressing my words in writing but you are the most special person I have ever [met],” DiCaprio wrote Cates after the film. “I’ll always remember you as the best acting mamma I ever had. You triumphed in your role.”

Cates had been bedridden and weighed 500 pounds when she was discovered and cast in the role as the Grape matriarch.

Peter Hedges, who wrote the book of the same name that evolved into the screenplay, saw Cates on a 1992 episode of Sally Jessy Raphael, titled “Too Heavy to Leave the House.” On the show, Texas-native Cates spoke about her obesity and a pelvic infection that caused her to gain nearly 150 pounds.

After Gilbert Grape, Cates appeared on TV in 1992's Picket Fences, 1994's Touched by an Angel and in the made-for-TV movie Wolf Girl in 2001.

In 2012, Cates had lost nearly 250 pounds and spoke to The Dallas Morning News about being optimistic about acting again. She had been housebound at the time and was recovering from a series of surgeries that had kept her in the hospital for nearly a year.

“I can always tell when [Gilbert Grape has] been on TV,” she said, “because there’ll be a rush of ‘friend’ requests.”

Cates is survived by husband Robert Cates and children Sheri, Mark and Chris. Celebration arrangements are pending.

8 Reasons The Message Of “Drag Race” Is More Important Than Ever

Art Matters

Trump has proposed a budget that would entirely eliminate funding for the National Endowment for the Arts. Thank goodness RuPaul has consistently cast truly unique artists, from Raja with her high-fashion genderqueer perspective to Thorgy and her Thorchestra to the defiantly brainy Sasha Velour. Even the much-maligned Serena ChaCha got you to Google “soft sculpture.” Children encouraged to appreciate art do better in school and commit fewer crimes, so when the Republicans pull the plug on Sesame Street, you might want to show your kids some Drag Race.

DID ALEXANDER SKARSGÅRD GO FULL FRONTAL IN ‘BIG LITTLE LIES’?

Did our dreams really come true?
From: Attitude
Big Little Lies has been causing quite the splash since it debuted.

Featuring the likes of Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, it’s one of the most star-studded TV shows to hit the small screen in years.

But during this weeks’s episode, all eyes were on True Blood star Alexander Skarsgård.

During an uncomfortable scene where Nicole Kidman’s character told him that she’s not got time to have sex with him, Alexander’s character suffered an injury after she bashed his, erm, rather sizable package with a tennis racket.

The results were utterly NSFW, and the shocking scene left fans wondering whether Alexander really did go full frontal or not.

Later in the episode, it turns out that the tennis racket broke his urethra in two places and led to a hospital stay. Ouch.

One fan tweeted: “Either Alexander Skarsgård has the biggest dick on earth or they used a rubber hose of some sort on Big Little Lies tonight.”

HBO are yet to confirm whether a prosthetic was used in the scene – but we have a feeling they’re just having fun teasing us.

Dominance – I’m very interested in D/s play. If you’re wanting to engage in some Dominance play time, let me know, and let’s discuss.  I’m not so much a fan of physical dominance, but I am your Superior in nearly every regard and I will behave as such. We’ll have to determine what you’ll get out of the situation…

D is also for...

Drugs/Drinking – Smoking was my one last vice. I miss it terribly, but it was killing me, I’m told. But if you smoke, you’re welcome to it. I’m happy to enjoy it secondhand. I think that’s still allowed. Drug (all kinds) free, but comfortable around 420. Nothing stronger in my presence though. I hate feeling responsible for someone, should something go awry.

I’ve also been sober for several years, but I would be terribly disappointed if you took that to mean that you shouldn’t enjoy a cocktail or a nice glass of wine in my company. Just because I’m deeply in love with seltzer, doesn’t mean everyone needs to be.

Rick Perry Accuses Texas A&M Gay Student Body President Of Stealing Election

"Does the principle of 'diversity' override and supersede all other values of our Aggie Honor Code?"
From: NewNowNext
Former Gov. Rick Perry has criticized the recent student elections that gave his alma mater, Texas A&M, its first openly gay student president and called their legitimacy into question.

This month, Bobby Brooks became the leader of the school’s student government after the top vote-getter, Robert McIntosh, was disqualified due to accusations of voter intimidation and failure to report campaign expenses. (A student court later cleared McIntosh of intimidation charges.)

In an op-ed in the Houston Chronicle Perry said the situation “made a mockery of due process and transparency” and at worst “allowed an election to be stolen outright.”

He accused school administrators of gaming the system just so the school could have its first gay president.

“Brooks’ presidency is being treated as a victory for ’diversity,'” he wrote. “It is difficult to escape the perception that this quest for ’diversity’ is the real reason the election outcome was overturned. Does the principle of ’diversity’ override and supersede all other values of our Aggie Honor Code?”

Amy Smith, the school’s senior vice president of marketing and communications, denies the allegation, telling the Texas Tribune that the elections are run by students, not administrators.

“I would say that we respectfully disagree with his assessment,” she said, “and his understanding of the election rules of student body president elections doesn’t reflect the facts.”

“Honestly, we were just surprised to see that the Secretary of Energy would take the time to weigh in in detail,” she added.

Perry, a former Texas governor and failed presidential candidate, has a long history of attacking the LGBT community—comparing homosexuality to alcoholism, opposing the repeal of anti-sodomy statutes, and claiming he was “greatly disappointed” the Boy Scouts lifted its gay ban.

Texas Representative Joe Barton (R-Ennis) said he didn’t agree that McIntosh should have been disqualified, but he believes “if you have a student-run organization, and the students make decisions, then generally you should stand back and let the students make those decisions.”

Brooks is slated to take office April 21.

Bannon Tells Trump: ‘Keep a Shit List’ of Republicans Who Opposed You

Trumpcare fails, Steve Bannon has pledged to remember who defied the White House.
From: The Daily Beast
As TrumpCare dies, the White House won’t forget who killed it — and plans on keeping a “shit list” of Republicans who stood in their way.

According to multiple Trump administration officials speaking to The Daily Beast on the condition of anonymity to talk freely, the president is angry that his first big legislative push is crumbling before his eyes—and his chief strategist Stephen K. Bannon is advising him to take names and keep a hit list of Republicans who worked for Trumpcare’s defeat.

“[Bannon] has told the president to keep a shit list on this,” one official told The Daily Beast. “He wants a running tally of [the Republicans] who want to sink this…Not sure if I’d call it an ‘enemies list,’ per se, but I wouldn’t want to be on it.”

One aide described it as a proposed “hit list” for Republicans not sufficiently loyal. Courses of action stemming from any related tally is yet to be determined, but the idea and message is that “we’ll remember you.”

Two senior Trump administration officials with direct knowledge of the process told The Daily Beast that Bannon and Trump have taken a “you’re either with us or against us” approach at this point, and that Bannon wants the tally of “against” versus “with us” mounted in his so-called West Wing “war room.”

“Burn the boats,” Bannon (in his typical, pugnacious style) advised Trump, according to one official involved. Burning one’s boats is a reference to when military commanders in hostile territories order his or her troops to destroy their own ships, so that they have to win or die trying.

Sources also said that others including Mick Mulvaney, Trump's director of the Office of Management and Budget and co-founder of the House Freedom Caucus, endorsed the idea of the running list, and that Trump agreed with the idea.

Emails to the White House and Bannon seeking comment were not immediately returned.

Freedom Caucus members, of course, are no strangers to barely-veiled threats from Trumpworld, and have remained undeterred this week by earlier attempts. On Tuesday, when Trump made his high-profile visit to Capitol Hill to try to rally Republicans to get behind his and Ryan’s plan, Trump specifically called out Rep. Mark Meadows, chairman of the Freedom Caucus, several times. According to those in the room, the president made it clear that he expected Meadows’ vote and support when push comes to shove.

“Mark, I’m coming after you,” Trump said, only half-jokingly, on Tuesday.

Freedom Caucus aides said they were similarly unperturbed on Friday. One simply responded to The Daily Beast’s question regarding potentially getting on Trump and Bannon’s “shit list” with one word: “Meh.”

“From day 1 in this fight, conservatives have been far more focused on keeping their promises and doing what’s best for their constituents versus any hypothetical political challenges,” another conservative congressional aide said. “That remains unchanged.”

Republican House members jumping ship on the AHCA, both in the hardline-right and so-called “moderate” camps, are hardly alone in their buyer’s remorse. On Thursday night, The New York Times reported that Trump himself has told four people close to him that he regrets going along with Speaker Ryan’s plan.

Bannon, for his part, is hardly pleased with the bill as it stands. According to Trump administration officials, Bannon himself hates the current AHCA—“he thinks it’s a piece of shit…and he told me as such,” one source described bluntly. “But, I mean, he's not going against [the president].”

If Trumpcare/Ryancare goes down in flames, a great share of the blame will inevitably be shoveled onto Speaker Ryan and House GOP leadership—a Republican leadership that just two short years ago Bannon was calling out as “all cunts.”

Cocks –  I love ’em! Mine’s about 7.5 inches and beautifully uncircumcised. It’s almost always hard too. I spend every day of my life like it’s seventh grade all over again, – trying to hide my boner with a math book.

As far as other people’s, I like big ones, they’re fun to play with. But not for very long. The best cocks in the world are the ones that fit perfectly in my mouth for hours of mouthcock fun! Those are my favorite. It’s why I never order the footlong at Subway. It’s more than one person needs.

I have yet to meet one I haven’t been able to make friends with yet.

Rick Perry ‘deeply troubled’ by election of gay Texas A&M student president

The energy secretary weighed in on the election at his alma mater in an opinion piece, implying voters were intimidated by ‘quest for diversity’

During his time as Texas governor, Rick Perry sought to crack down on electoral misconduct despite scant evidence it was a problem.

Now in Washington as Donald Trump’s energy secretary, the former Republican presidential candidate is keeping up his interest in the topic. He has written an article casting doubt on the process that saw Texas A&M University elect its first openly gay student body president amid a controversy over glow sticks.

The US Senate confirmed Perry’s appointment as energy secretary only three weeks ago, but evidently he is not too busy settling into his new job as the custodian of America’s vast stockpile of nuclear weapons that he cannot find the time to opine on student politics at his alma mater.

In an opinion piece published on Wednesday by the Houston Chronicle, Perry writes: “As Texas’ first Aggie governor and as someone who was twice elected Yell Leader” of the university, he is “deeply troubled” by the conduct of its administration and student government association during this month’s election.

Bobby Brooks, an economics junior at the university, was elected after the initial winner, Robert McIntosh, was disqualified following allegations of voter intimidation and a finance reporting failure, according to the campus newspaper The Battalion. The voter intimidation allegations were later dismissed, but McIntosh’s campaign was said not to have provided receipts for multi-colored glow sticks (like those seen at concerts or raves) used in a promotional video. McIntosh is the son of Alison McIntosh, a Dallas-based Republican fundraiser.

Perry states that he was at first proud of the students for electing an openly gay man, which he saw as “a testament to the Aggie character”.

But, he added, “Brooks’ presidency is being treated as a victory for ‘diversity’. It is difficult to escape the perception that this quest for ‘diversity’ is the real reason the election outcome was overturned.

“Every Aggie ought to ask themselves: How would they act and feel if the victim was different? What if McIntosh had been a minority student instead of a white male? What if Brooks had been the candidate disqualified? Would the administration and the student body have allowed the first gay student body president to be voided for using charity glow sticks? Would the student body have allowed a black student body president to be disqualified on anonymous charges of voter intimidation?
We all know that the administration, the SGA and student body would not have permitted such a thing to happen. The outcome would have been different if the victim was different.”

Brandon Rottinghaus, a politics professor at the University of Houston, noted the readiness of Trump to express trenchant opinions on all manner of issues, however minor or outside the normal scope of his day-to-day tasks. “There’s a new brand of politics at play. It is a combination of reaction and anger … kind of a shoot-from-the-hip mentality that is really altering the norms,” he said.

“I think it was ill-advised and inelegant for [Perry] to weigh in on this matter,” Rottinghaus added. “It approximates bullying, which is not becoming of a cabinet secretary, especially one whose jurisdiction doesn’t include this in any particular way. That said, it’s clear that he feels passionately about the university and is willing to put his credibility on the line for it … You can take the governor out of Texas but you can’t take Texas out of the governor.”

Amy Smith, a university spokeswoman, did not immediately respond to a request for comment but told the Texas Tribune that “his understanding of the election rules of student body president elections doesn’t reflect the facts … Honestly, we were just surprised to see that the secretary of energy would take the time to weigh in in detail and we respectfully disagree with his assessment of what happened.”

A&M’s large, conservative-leaning campus sits about 100 miles northwest of Houston. Perry graduated in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in animal science after his proud spell as a “yell leader” – a student who walks the sidelines during university sports events and whips up the crowd.

Perry was Texas governor from 2000-2015 and twice ran for president. His first bid, for 2012, was scuppered when during a debate he forgot the name of a federal agency he wanted to abolish. It was the Department of Energy.
